“Bring On United” (Mitten)

Finally, the new book by Andy Mitten has arrived in the mail in the weekend. This is my Christmas reading this year between the football and dinners.

Short story

I’m a late bloomer as Manchester United fan. Growing up, I was a ice hockey player in my hometown Stavanger, and I didn’t start watching football before University in Oslo. I went to the pub with friends for the beer and shit talking. But since one of my friends were Leeds and Liverpool supporters, I was introduced to one certain player – Eric Cantona – while he was in Leeds. I loved the French arrogance. I was so stoked that I even bought a shirt in the summer of 1992. Little did I know that this shirt would not exist 6 months later.

26th of November 1992 marked shift if my thinking of being a football support. The next time I went to the pub for watching football, I still had the Cantona Leeds shirt on, the bartender put huge grim on his face. Obviously, he was a Manchester United support and picked up a new Cantona United shirt and said to me: “You can’t wear that shirt now. You can get this one for free if you burn the old one”. From that day, I was a Manchester United support, and will till the day I die.
